Users Stopping Weight-Loss Jabs Regain Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

New research indicates that individuals who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a leading medical journal points out that while overweight individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals using such drugs must be cognizant of the danger of fast weight regain when the medication ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about 18 months.

Comparing Treatments

The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with other pills.

Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically see a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the injections explains the amplified weight return.

The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Issue?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts argue that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.

This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

Users who have stopped the medication describe a sudden return of cravings.

"It was like a switch flipping and you become ravenous," described one woman.

This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Widespread Use

Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, researchers emphasize that while these medications are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing lifestyle management.
