The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US on five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
